New Job is Swell

Hi all. I finished my first day at my new job. It was a great day. First I had to deal with my insomnia problem (was rather dragging through the day as a result of being awake for three hours last night after going to bed at 10:00) which made the day-long orientation (computer training, filling out HR forms, etc.) difficult. I love the firm, the other summer associates are great, and it looks like it will be an energy-packed summer. I had a delicious and fancy lunch at Masa, and after work we went out for happy hour.

I'm sorry but I don't plan to discuss my job too much this summer, because I fear things like this. As you know I'm paranoid about school/work peeps finding my blog so I'm just not going to talk about it. But let me just say it is going to be high energy, challenging, and fun. But man, am I exhausted. I wish I had a longer break between school and the new job. *sigh*

Oh, I did find out today that last year's summer associate class had placed bets on the collective weight gain of the class. I've been warned by numerous associates at the firm that due to the various events (daily lunches plus dinners/happy hours) people gain tons of weight. GREAT. Just great. Apparently the average weight gain last year was six pounds per person over the course of 12 weeks. Super duper. But, lunch today was delicious...

One more thing. OMG, everyone was wearing a black suit today. I felt like a freak wearing pinstripes. And I had little pleats in my skirt, which started to seem kinda freakish, too. Actually, one girl was wearing a gray suit. I thought I could slip in a pink suit, or even Fiona (my light green tweed suit), but it is going to be difficult. I'll wear my taupe suit tomorrow and see how that goes over. I thought it might be kind of nice to just throw on a suit every day--not have to worry too much about the wardrobe etc., but actually, that bums me out. I love clothes too much to wear suits all the time. I feel like I'm in costume.

6 pounds may be average, but during my summer at F&B I put on about 25 or 30. All of the clothes I bought to make it through the summer no longer fit by the end of my 14 weeks there. Everyone said I'd lose the weight back in law school, but it didn't happen.

If I remember correctly, my days went like this:
Coffee and carrot cake muffin at Caribou. (Fortunately, they do not make those muffins anymore). Lunch at any restaurant in town - most often Brit's, the Local, or somewhere on 1st Avenue. Afternoon break for Sola, Jamba Juice, or DQ. And then happy hour. Egads. It's a wonder it was only 25 lbs.

GULP! Maybe it's time to start purging my meals after I eat them?

KIDDING, people. Kidding. I know that's totally bad for my teeth.

a good fiber based laxative is my plan of action.

Could you break these folks in with some edgy accessorizing with your suits?

Well, that was a problem, too. You know that one vintage necklace that I wear with the silver flowers and the pearls? I wore that. It seemed like a little too much when I first put it on, so I took it off again, and then before leaving the house (and on Shad's sage advice) I put it back on. But most of the others were not wearing jewelery. I'm gonna wear some flashy earrings tomorrow. Maybe a scarf?

It's probably not that big of a deal. As far as I know, the other ladies in the class were looking around and making the same assessments as I, just waiting to break out their own personal Fionas.

ok, we all watch t.v. and we all know that in most every office type situation on t.v. there is that crazy and wacky girl or dude that dresses out of the norm and everyone loves them. they're quirky... hilarious... rad. i say go for it, 'cause since when was t.v. not accurate? come one people.

i don't know if you want to know this sarah, but i know where you can get the muffins they used to have a caribou. personally, i had a thing for the chocolate chunk. caribou used to get their baked good from new french bakery. now they get it from some gross place, i don't like it.

ugly juice, i know how you feel! these epidemiologists can be so serious. whenever i dress the way i really want to, i feel like people won't take me seriously. as if, if i have time to put together my outfit, wear nail polish, and go so far as to accessorize (my favorite part!), then i must not be spending enough time doing research. well, this year i decided no more! from now on i wear what i want. my goal is to raise the fashion bar in the west bank office building. anyway, i think a scarf is good way to dress up an outfit without going overboard. by the end of the summer, i am sure you will be able to wear the green tweed.

Oh, Emily, I did not need that information (see the part above about never having lost those 25 lbs). At least I don't know where the new french bakery is.

As for the law firm dress code, it's tricky. I just got back from 3 months of wearing all suits, and I'm so happy to be back in the business-casual world. Now that I've purchased 6(!) new suits, I ought to wear them more often, but it's so much more fun to wear a skirt or capris and a sweater set in the summer. I'm sure everyone wore their most conservative outfit for day 1, and you'll see increasingly creative things as everyone tires of the same 4 suits.

OK. Epilogue. I wore a very light taupe suit today. Two of the other Summers wore lightly colored suits, too (one was tan, the other was a tan tweed). So we get into our morning orientation session, and the lady running the session asked if we had any questions, and all of the female Summers start peppering her with questions about the dress code. It was hilarious. Apparently I was not the only one bothered by the black suits yesterday. I have learned that it is acceptable to wear jacket and pants or skirt as separates (that is, it doesn't need to be a suit suit) and that I don't have to wear a suit on casual Fridays, but probably shouldn't wear jeans. The official word on the situation seems to be "You earn the right to dress casual." Very well. I think Fiona stays in the closet for another week or so, but I do believe she'll make an appearance.

sarah, maybe this will be good info for you then:
most of the pastries sold at caribou now are all made in the same factory and are flash frozen and shipped all over the u.s. so they are "exactly" the same everywhere you go. the employees are then told to let them sit out for a few hours or so to thaw before being put on the shelf to sell. sure, some may be tastey... but it's a little creepy, eh?

Fiona should not stay in the closet for long. She deserves to be out and about in full force.

UJ, they didn't hire you only because you're smart and capable. They hired you for your unmistakable brand of joie de vive. So, if you got it, flaunt it!
